Funding Round Update Presentation Template
Closing a funding round is not the end of the communication work — it is the beginning of the next phase. How you communicate the raise to employees, the press, your customers, and your existing investors determines whether the momentum of the close translates into the momentum you need to deploy capital effectively.
This template covers the post-close funding round communication presentation for each key audience.
All-Hands Employee Presentation
The all-hands after a funding close is the most important internal communication a founder makes. Employees want to understand what the money means for them and for the company's trajectory.
Slide 1: The News State the facts clearly: round size, round type (Series A, B, C, SAFE extension, etc.), lead investor(s), participating investors. Announce it with appropriate celebration — this is a milestone.
Slide 2: What This Round Represents Why did investors bet on this company at this valuation? What do they see that others might not? Connect the investor conviction to the product and market thesis the team has been building. This is not the time for false modesty — investors just validated years of work.
Slide 3: What the Money Buys Specific, concrete allocation:
- Headcount: which teams are growing, how many people, on what timeline
- Product: what gets built or accelerated that could not before
- Market expansion: which new geographies, verticals, or customer segments
- Infrastructure: any operational investments required to scale
Employees who understand how capital will be deployed trust the plan. Employees who hear "we'll grow the team and build product" don't.
Slide 4: The Milestones This Unlocks What does success look like at the end of this funding period? What do you need to accomplish before the next raise — or before profitability, if that is the plan?
Be specific: "By the time we raise our Series B, we expect to be at $X ARR, with Y enterprise customers, and Z in the pipeline." Specific milestones give teams something to rally around and give the raise a context that makes the next goal feel achievable.
Slide 5: The New Investors Introduce the lead investor(s). Who are they? What have they built or backed before? What value do they bring beyond capital (board expertise, network, operational experience)?
Employees who understand why specific investors were chosen understand the strategic intent behind the round.
Slide 6: What Doesn't Change Culture, values, and operating principles that are not changing. Funding rounds sometimes create anxiety — is the culture about to change? Are we going to be pressured to grow at any cost? Be explicit about what remains constant.
Board and Existing Investor Update
Your existing investors were not the lead in this round — but they participated, or chose not to. Either way, they deserve a clear communication that covers the round's implications for the cap table and the company's direction.
Cover:
- Round terms: pre-money valuation, investment amount, post-money valuation, new investor pro-rata rights
- Cap table summary: post-round ownership by investor group (founders, employees, seed investors, Series A, new investors)
- Option pool refresh (if any)
- Board composition changes: any new board seats, observer rights granted
- Use of proceeds at the same level of detail as the employee presentation
If you did not give existing investors their pro-rata: this communication should address that directly, with the rationale. Investors who feel blindsided about pro-rata treatment will communicate that dissatisfaction to other founders.
Press Announcement Support Deck
For briefing journalists, analysts, and PR teams on key messages for the announcement.
Key messages:
- The round: size, investors, type
- Why now (the market timing argument for why this raise makes sense in the current environment)
- What you will do with the capital (three specific use cases)
- Company milestones to date (traction that justifies the valuation)
- One or two quotes from the lead investor on why they invested
Supporting data points:
- Customer count or revenue growth (whatever you are willing to disclose)
- Any impressive metrics: retention rate, NPS, product usage
- Team size and key recent hires
What not to include in the press announcement:
- Exact valuation (you control whether to disclose this)
- Forward-looking revenue projections (creates liability if you miss them)
- Competitor comparisons (let the story stand on its own)
Customer Communication
If the round is large enough to matter to customers — and for B2B companies, raises above $20M often do — a brief customer communication is warranted.
Frame it as stability and investment:
- The company is well-funded for the next phase
- The capital will accelerate the product roadmap
- Service and support commitments remain unchanged
- You are grateful for their business, which is what made this raise possible
Keep it brief. Customers don't need the full investor story — they need confidence that their vendor is not going to disappear and that the product they rely on will improve.
Common Funding Update Communication Mistakes
The all-hands that lacks specificity. "We're going to grow the team and build great products" is not a plan. Employees who have been through a company that raised and then misallocated capital know the difference.
Forgetting existing investors. The founders who send a brief note to existing investors after a round closes — even just a "thank you for your continued support, here's the cap table update" — build relationships that pay dividends at the next round.
Over-celebrating without connecting to work. A funding close is a milestone, not a destination. The best all-hands communications celebrate and immediately redirect: here's what we're going to build with this, here's the first thing we're doing on Monday.
Ignoring the dilution conversation. Option holders who don't understand dilution often misunderstand what the round means for their equity. A brief, plain-language explanation of how dilution works — and what it means for their specific grant — prevents confusion and resentment.
