Slide Deck for Food Service and Restaurant Companies

Food service companies — restaurant groups, contract dining operators, catering companies, and emerging food concepts — need presentation skills at every stage of growth. A new concept pitches investors. An established chain reports to shareholders. A contract dining company wins a hospital or corporate campus account through an RFP presentation. A ghost kitchen concept launches on delivery platforms. Each situation demands a different deck with a different audience and different content priorities.

This guide covers the core presentation types for food service and restaurant companies.

New Restaurant Concept Pitch to Investors

If you're seeking equity investment to grow a restaurant concept, your investor pitch needs to answer five questions: What is it? Who is the customer? What does the unit economics look like? How do you expand it? Why you?

Concept Differentiation

Open with the concept in one sentence — not the menu, the position. "Fast-casual Vietnamese that's priced between Chipotle and Sweetgreen and serves the working professional who wants something lighter than burgers" is a concept. "Great food at great prices" is noise. Follow with your target customer (age, income, occasion, need state), the market size you're addressing, and what makes you genuinely different from alternatives.

Unit Economics

This is the center of gravity for any restaurant investor deck. Show your AUV (Average Unit Volume) target — use comp store data if you have operating locations, or benchmark against comparable public comps if you're pre-scale. Build up your four-wall P&L:

  • Revenue: dine-in, off-premise (delivery and takeout), catering, other
  • Food cost %: your target and actual (industry varies; fast casual typically targets 28–32%)
  • Labor cost %: all-in hourly and management labor (fast casual typically 25–30%; full service 30–35%)
  • Occupancy: rent, CAM, insurance, property tax as % of sales
  • Other operating expenses: supplies, credit card fees, utilities, repairs, marketing

The result is your four-wall EBITDA. Show the cash-on-cash return on a typical unit investment. Show the break-even timeline.

Site Criteria

Show what a good site looks like for your concept: minimum square footage, preferred square footage, co-tenancy requirements (near whom do you perform best), traffic count minimums, drive-through requirement if applicable, and your sweet spot for rent per square foot.

Growth Plan

Show a 5-year opening plan: how many units per year, in what markets, in what sequence (dense up existing markets before expanding geographically — this concentrates marketing spend and management attention). Explain your real estate strategy and whether you plan to own, lease, or partner with a developer.

Food Service Management Company RFP Response

Contract dining operators (companies that manage dining programs for corporations, hospitals, universities, and schools) win business through RFP responses and presentations. Your deck needs to demonstrate culinary quality, operational competence, and client partnership.

Team Credentials

Lead with your team. The client is buying your people as much as your platform. Show your account director, executive chef, and support team with photos and relevant experience. Include your regional and national support structure.

Culinary Philosophy and Local Sourcing

Describe your culinary approach: scratch cooking vs. assembly, seasonal menus, local purchasing commitment (% of food spend within X miles), global cuisine breadth. If you participate in the USDA Local and Regional Food Purchase Assistance program or similar, mention it. Show your local sourcing map if it's meaningful.

Nutrition and Compliance

For healthcare accounts, show your HACCP compliance plan (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points — the 7-principle framework required by FDA). For school accounts, demonstrate USDA Smart Snacks compliance. For any account, show your dietary accommodation capabilities (allergen management, vegan/vegetarian/halal/kosher options).

Technology Platform

Clients increasingly require a consumer-facing technology experience. Describe your POS system, mobile ordering app, dietary preference customization, and the client-facing reporting dashboard — how the client sees participation rates, satisfaction scores, and program financials in real time.

Multi-Unit Restaurant Company Annual Investor Day

Annual investor day or earnings call supplemental decks for restaurant chains need to communicate clearly to public or institutional investors.

Cover same-store sales growth (show traffic comp and ticket comp separately — traffic and check are different levers requiring different actions), new unit openings vs. plan and any pipeline color on next year's class, cost pressures with specific data (use BLS food-at-home CPI for food inflation, BLS wage data for labor inflation), digital channel mix (% of sales through app or online ordering — this is now a key investor metric for restaurant chains), loyalty program enrollment and engagement, and your 3-year development pipeline.

Menu Engineering Presentation

When presenting menu strategy to your operations team or board, use the classic contribution margin matrix. Categorize every menu item in four quadrants: Stars (high margin, high popularity — protect and promote these), Plow Horses (high popularity, lower margin — look for cost reduction without recipe change), Puzzles (high margin, lower popularity — can marketing or placement boost trial?), and Dogs (low margin, low popularity — candidates for removal unless they serve a strategic purpose like allergen accommodation). Show your menu mix analysis with item-level data and your recommended actions.

Food Safety Training Deck for Staff

Every food service operation needs a staff food safety training deck. This is also a compliance document — it should be dated, version-controlled, and signed by staff at training completion.

Cover the HACCP 7 Principles: Conduct a Hazard Analysis, Identify Critical Control Points, Establish Critical Limits, Establish Monitoring Procedures, Establish Corrective Actions, Establish Verification Procedures, Establish Record-Keeping Procedures. Then cover your critical control points for your specific menu: what temperatures matter and where (cooking, holding, receiving), your temperature logging requirements, hand hygiene protocol (when, how — reference FDA Food Code), and the Big 9 allergens (per the FDA FASTER Act effective January 1, 2023, which added sesame as the 9th major allergen alongside milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans). Include your pest control protocol and reporting structure.

Ghost Kitchen and Virtual Brand Launch Presentation

Ghost kitchen concepts need a launch deck that addresses the unique challenges of operating without a physical dining room.

Concept Rationale

Explain why this concept works as delivery-only: cuisine type that travels well (avoids sogginess, holds temperature, plates attractively in packaging), clear ordering occasion, and differentiated positioning in delivery app search results.

Kitchen Partner Requirements

Specify what you need from a ghost kitchen facility partner: equipment (flat top, fryer, oven, refrigeration), prep space, storage, packaging requirements, and proximity to target delivery radius.

Delivery Platform Strategy

Show your platform mix: DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub, and any regional platforms. Cover your pricing strategy (ghost kitchen pricing is typically 15–20% higher than in-restaurant to account for the 20–30% platform commission). Show your projected sales mix by platform and your customer acquisition strategy on each platform (optimized listing, promotional placement, early launch discounting).

Marketing Without a Physical Location

Explain how you'll drive awareness without foot traffic: social media, influencer seeding, PR, delivery app advertising, and any earned media strategy.
