Icon Libraries for Presentations — Free and Pro Options
Icons in presentations serve one purpose: visual shorthand. A well-chosen icon communicates a concept instantly, reduces the need for explanatory text, and adds consistent visual structure to a deck. The wrong icons — inconsistent styles, low resolution, or conceptually off — create visual noise.
Free Icon Libraries
Heroicons (heroicons.com) — 292 hand-crafted SVG icons by the Tailwind CSS team. Available in outline and solid styles. Extremely clean, consistent, and modern. MIT license — free for any use. Best for tech, SaaS, and product decks.
Lucide (lucide.dev) — 1,400+ icons, a community fork of Feather Icons. Thin, consistent stroke weight. Free and open source. Downloads as SVG. Excellent coverage of interface and communication concepts.
Phosphor Icons (phosphoricons.com) — 1,200+ icons in six weights (thin through bold). The weight flexibility is valuable — you can match the icon visual weight to your typography. Free.
Tabler Icons (tabler.io/icons) — 5,000+ free MIT-licensed SVG icons. One of the largest consistent free sets available. Strong for business, productivity, and interface concepts.
Google Material Symbols (fonts.google.com/icons) — thousands of icons in multiple visual styles (outlined, filled, rounded, sharp). Free. Wide coverage. Works well for tech presentations given the association with Google's design language.
Noun Project (thenounproject.com) — over 5 million icons from thousands of designers. Free icons require attribution; a Pro plan ($9.99/month) removes attribution requirements and provides higher download limits. The quality and style vary widely — curate carefully.
Pro Icon Libraries
Streamline (streamlinehq.com) — 30,000+ icons across multiple styles. The consistency and coverage are unmatched. Subscription-based but the quality is significantly higher than most free options. Worth it for presentations that need dense icon coverage.
Iconfinder (iconfinder.com) — a marketplace with both free and paid icon sets. Allows purchasing individual sets rather than a subscription. Good for one-time needs with a specific visual style requirement.
Icons8 (icons8.com) — 3.8 million icons across multiple styles, including 3D, flat, outlined, and filled. The free tier includes icons with attribution; paid plans start at $9/month.
How to Use Icons Effectively
Use one icon style throughout the deck. Mixing outline icons with filled icons, or mixing bold icons with thin icons, creates visual inconsistency. Choose one library and one weight and use it everywhere.
Size icons consistently. Icons paired with text in bullet points should be the same size as the text height (20–24px for body text). Icons used as slide heroes (large icons representing a concept) should be 80–120px. Never scale the same icon to both sizes in a single deck — choose a purpose.
Color icons with your palette. Download SVG format icons so you can change the color to match your brand or accent color. PNG icons with a fixed color are less flexible. On dark slides, use light icon colors. On light slides, use dark or accent-colored icons.
Do not use more than five icons per slide. When every bullet point has an icon, the icons stop communicating and become decoration. Use icons for the top-level concepts, not every sub-item.
Label icons directly. Icons rarely stand alone unambiguously — a light bulb could mean "ideas," "electricity," "caution," or "turning on." Always pair icons with a label unless the visual meaning is universally unambiguous (a checkmark, a phone icon, a calendar).
Format for Presentation Use
Download icons as SVG whenever possible. SVG icons scale to any size without pixelation — critical for full-screen display on a 4K projector. PNG icons that look sharp at 64px can appear blurry at 256px.
Most presentation tools accept SVG. If your tool does not, convert SVG to PNG at the specific size you need (not smaller, not larger) before importing.
Summary
Heroicons, Lucide, or Phosphor for free options with quality and consistency. Streamline for pro use. One style, one weight throughout the deck. SVG format for scalability. Label icons directly.
Slide-deck.io includes an integrated icon library — search and insert icons without leaving the editor, pre-styled to match your deck's color palette.
