How to Make a Presentation Portfolio
A presentation portfolio is useful for designers, consultants, keynote speakers, and anyone whose work involves creating slide decks. It demonstrates range, design sensibility, and communication skill — often better than a CV or a written description.
What to Include
Three to six complete decks. Portfolio quality beats quantity. Three strong, diverse decks are more compelling than twelve mediocre ones. Each deck should represent a different context: one data-heavy deck, one design-forward deck, one narrative/storytelling deck.
A range of contexts. If possible, include work that spans different types of presentations: an investor pitch, a product demo, a training deck, a conference keynote. This demonstrates flexibility rather than a narrow specialty.
Your best slide from each deck as a cover image. The cover image is what draws someone to click into a deck. Choose the slide that best represents the deck's visual quality — usually a strong title slide or a visually distinctive content slide.
A brief description for each deck. Two to three sentences: who the presentation was for, what the goal was, what the outcome was. Do not write an essay. The deck should speak for itself; the description provides context.
What to Remove or Redact
Confidential client information. If a deck contains financial projections, internal strategy, or personally identifiable information, redact or replace it before including it in a public portfolio. Options:
- Replace specific numbers with consistent fictional placeholders that maintain the visual design
- Blur or black-out sensitive text using the presentation tool's shape overlay feature
- Request explicit client permission before including
Weak slides. Remove slides from a deck that you are not proud of rather than including them because they were part of the original project. Your portfolio contains only your best work.
Dated work that no longer represents your skill level. A portfolio of work from five years ago may not represent what you can do today. Update or replace as your skills improve.
Format Options
PDF export. The simplest format. A multi-page PDF where each page is one slide. Works for emailing directly. Limitations: no animation, no interactivity.
Shareable link from the presentation tool. Google Slides, Canva, and Slide-deck.io all generate shareable view links. These preserve the intended resolution and can include animation. Best for sharing in a message or email where the recipient will view it digitally.
Dedicated portfolio website. For designers and agencies, a dedicated portfolio page with embedded or linked decks is most professional. Platforms include Notion (embed a link or PDF), personal websites (iframe embed or PDF viewer), or dedicated portfolio tools like Behance.
Presentation within a presentation. A meta-deck that acts as the portfolio — each slide is a cover image with a brief description, and clicking leads to the full deck. Works well as a PDF or shareable link.
Hosting Options
Google Drive: Share-with-link, view-only access. Free. Works for individual decks; less elegant for a curated portfolio presentation.
Slide-deck.io: Generate a shareable link for any deck. Works for individual decks with professional presentation quality.
Notion: Embed PDFs or links in a Notion page. Free for personal use. A good low-effort portfolio page.
Behance or Dribbble: Design-community platforms where slides can be uploaded as image collections. Good for visibility within the design community.
Personal domain: The most professional option. A simple one-page site with links or embeds. Requires a domain and a basic web host but signals seriousness.
Presenting Your Portfolio
When sharing your portfolio in a pitch or meeting context, prepare to walk through one or two decks rather than expecting the viewer to explore independently. Have a verbal narrative for each: what the challenge was, what decisions you made, what worked and what you would do differently.
Portfolio walk-through questions to prepare for:
- "Why did you choose this layout over a different approach?"
- "How did you handle the client's constraint around X?"
- "What would you change if you were doing this again?"
Summary
Three to six complete decks showing range. Redact confidential information. Best slide as cover image. Two to three sentence context description per deck. Shareable link or PDF for easy sharing.
Slide-deck.io generates shareable view links for any deck — link directly from your portfolio page without exporting or uploading separately.
