Angel Investor Update Email Template Deck
Angel investors are often the most underutilized resource a startup has. They wrote checks, they want you to succeed, and many of them have networks and expertise that could meaningfully accelerate your growth. But most founders send investor updates only when something significant happens — which means angels are disengaged precisely when you need them most.
A consistent, well-structured angel investor update keeps your backers warm, surfaces help at the right moments, and builds the kind of ongoing relationship that leads to follow-on checks, warm introductions, and the kind of informal advice that does not come from people who do not know your business.
Cadence
Monthly is the right cadence for angel investor updates during the first two years. After that, quarterly is acceptable as the relationship matures and the investors have a reliable mental model of the business.
Skipping a month because things are hard is exactly the wrong time to skip. Angels who receive updates only during good months learn to read silence as a bad sign. Angels who receive updates through a difficult quarter — including honest assessments of what went wrong and what you are doing about it — develop trust in your judgment and candor that translates into loyalty during the hard moments that come later.
Format: Deck vs. Email
Some founders send plain text investor updates. Others send decks. The right format depends on your investors and your information density.
Plain text email works well when your updates are narrative — a few paragraphs on what happened, what you are doing, and what you need. It reads faster and feels more personal.
A deck (shared as a link in the email) works better when you have charts, screenshots, or structured data that benefits from visual presentation. A five-slide deck with your metrics chart, a product screenshot, and a clear ask communicates more in less reading time than the equivalent content in prose.
For most early-stage companies, a hybrid works best: a brief email with three paragraphs of narrative context, followed by a link to a five-slide deck for the detail.
Five-Slide Angel Update Deck Structure
Slide 1: The headline. One sentence on the most important thing from this month. Make it specific. "We hit $50K MRR" or "We closed [Company] — our first Fortune 500 customer" or "We had a tough month — churn jumped to 5% and we are addressing it head-on."
Slide 2: Key metrics. ARR/MRR, month-over-month growth rate, customer count, churn, burn rate, and runway. Presented consistently every month. Include a small trend chart if you have the data to make one meaningful.
Slide 3: What we did this month. Three to five specific bullets. New customers, product shipped, hires made, partnerships signed. Be specific enough that the investor could tell someone else what you did.
Slide 4: What we need. The most important slide, and the one most founders forget. Make a specific, actionable ask. "We are looking for introductions to Series A investors in the DevTools or infrastructure space — specifically firms that have led rounds in developer tooling." Or "We are hiring a VP of Sales — if you know strong candidates with experience scaling a PLG motion to enterprise, I would welcome a warm intro." Generic asks ("any help is welcome") produce no help.
Slide 5: What is coming next. Three things you are focused on in the coming month. This sets up the accountability loop for the next update.
What Makes an Angel Update Great
Specificity. "Revenue is growing" is useless. "$182,000 ARR, up 22% from last month, driven by two new enterprise contracts" is useful.
Honesty about hard things. Angels who only hear good news develop unrealistic expectations about your company. An angel who hears about your churn problem before it becomes a crisis can help you address it. An angel who hears about it in the post-mortem cannot.
A real ask. Angels want to help. Give them a way to. The ask should be specific enough that a connected angel can take action within 24 hours of reading it.
Consistency. The same format, the same metrics, every month. Investors who receive three months of updates in the same format can spot trends, which makes their help more targeted.
Slide Deck makes it easy to create a reusable angel update template — duplicate it each month, update the numbers, and share via link so you can see who opens it and which slides they spend the most time on.
